AI got your tongue?
On March 13, 2024, days before this newsletter went to press, the European Union approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, an expansive law with global reach that impacts technology companies, corporations, and business leaders worldwide. If you’re an organization that plans to develop or deploy AI -
- the EU AI Act is likely to affect you...
While the EU Act is the first of its kind, U.S. federal guidelines, such as the AI Bill of Rights, exist, and a number of U.S. States have AI legislation at various stages, which share many of the same requirements.
As an early adopter of AI, our team has been following with interest the three-year progress of this legislation, as well as the impact of large language model (LLM) and generative AI adoption. In this newsletter, we address the issue of AI and data quality, a key factor when it comes to AI regulations. We also discuss how we’re working with customers to help them proactively optimize their Azure cloud costs. According to Gartner, by 2025 90% of enterprise deployments of GenAI will slow as costs exceed value and 30% of projects will be abandoned after proof of concept due to poor data quality, inadequate risk controls, escalating costs, or unclear business value.
The ability to cost-effectively scale your data governance processes so you can support your organization’s plans for LLM and AI is key. So please check out our article on AI and Trustworthy Data as well as the update on AdminAssist. If you are an Archive360 customer and your organization hasn’t already implemented AdminAssist, please speak with your account management team.
Delivering On AI’s Promise Begins and Ends with Trustworthy Data
According to Gartner, by 2025, 90% of enterprise deployments of genAI will slow as costs exceed value and 30% of those projects will be abandoned after proof of concept (POC) due to poor data quality, inadequate risk controls, escalating costs, or unclear business value.
Amidst an ever-increasing volume of data¹, organizations struggle to gain insight from their data for a variety of reasons:
- Data is trapped in isolated silos, inaccessible when and where needed
- Lack of recognition that data is important
- Lack of data literacy and accountability
- Non-standard data usage and delivery
- Inconsistent governance and control
- Overlapping data holdings across the organization
Being able to deliver an effective AI program and derive, efficiently and effectively, the most value from data depends on shifting the data management paradigm:
FROM |
To |
||
Treating data as a work byproduct |
Treating data as a strategic asset |
||
Inconsistent or missing data classification |
A standard data set classification framework across the organization |
||
Unreliable data |
Data literacy and accountability |
||
User-based management of data |
Unified, policy-based governance of application and system data |
||
Passive data access management |
Automatically moving post operational data to a more secure archive to ensure data is properly protected |
||
Costly and risky data storage in the production environment |
Automatically retiring post operational data to a storage solution that improves operational system performance and minimizes the data’s overall lifetime costs and risks, ensuring legal & policy compliance |
||
Inconsistent data quality assurance |
Continual data integrity validation and tracking |
To enable and facilitate this paradigm shift, organizations need to set and adhere to explicit data rules, invest in developing data literacy and accountability, and harness technology to drive standards, practices, and policies to preserve and enhance the value of its data.
Archive360’s Unified Data Governance platform provides the technical foundation to automatically manage risky and inactive data more efficiently and cost-effectively. By migrating the data to your own dedicated SaaS archive, locking down who can access it, and managing its lifecycle, you reduce data storage, management, and discovery costs and mitigate data compliance risks. Our platform provides unmatched options for classifying, protecting, processing, managing, and tracking your data from creation through disposition. You’ll know and trust your data – where it was created, who created, accessed, or has access to it, what topic(s) it is related to, and if it contains sensitive information – so you can manage its value and risks more effectively and efficiently and be in a better position to deliver on AI’s promise. For more information on data retirement, read our whitepaper.
¹Statista estimates that 90% of the world’s data was generated in the last two years alone.

Partners In Innovation - 2024 is Starting Strong!
Archive360’s partners have been instrumental in helping more than 2000 customers move in excess of 150 PB of data to the cloud, and help them manage it there securely, scalably and cost-effectively.
Our customers continue to face significant challenges when it comes to data governance. However, together we can help them address major issues in terms of retiring/decommissioning applications and systems, retiring data out of operational applications, archiving the 1,000+ exabytes of files trapped in network attached storage (NAS) and file shares, supporting the myriad of compliance requirements to retain a broad range of communications data.
Many of our customers urgently need our expertise to prepare for application end of life/end of support. Two areas that are key for us to be working together are:
- Dell EMC SourceOne is reaching its end of life (EOL) and no longer being supported at the end of 2024
- Veritas Enterprise Vault (EV) customers face an uncertain future as a result of the recent Cohesity announcement and “…remaining assets of Veritas’ businesses…” becoming part of DataCo.
Since 2012, Archive360 has helped more organizations worldwide successfully migrate their archives, journals and legacy data than any other vendor! In 2024, with your help, we’re on track to maintain that unbeaten record.
Make sure you’re working with your Archive360 partner manager and field team to benefit from the marketing programs and SPIFF we have available for the next few quarters specifically focused on SourceOne and EV. I look forward to our continued collaboration and growth.

GovTech Trends 2024
US CAPITAL BUZZ
At the beginning of the year our CMO had the honor of presenting to the Greater Washington DC Chapter of ARMA. Her presentation, “Data Governance, Records and Compliance, with AI Along for the Ride” examined some of the key technology trends for Federal agencies as we entered 2024.
Two key trends were paramount:
- Everyone (including Archive360) is concerned about AI! Check out the introduction from our CEO, Bob Desteno, as well as our lead article discussing AI challenges associated with access to trustworthy data.
- “Trustworthy” data, whether for AI or to ensure compliance with your data governance obligations requires data rationalization and consolidation. To understand how other agencies are addressing this, check out this case study featuring the Department of Homeland Security and our partner, Peraton. The case study discusses how DHS created a single secure, cloud-based data governance platform that makes active, inactive and legacy application data available for Business Intelligence needs while simultaneously meeting the June 2024 records management requirements of M 23-07 as well as their FOIA and eDiscovery obligations.
As you read the newsletter and case study, I encourage you to think about how your data governance and records management programs help support your agency’s AI objectives. If you’d like to learn more, please contact me at mary.mauer@archive360.com
